Is it really all about Jesus?
An amazing thing has been happening in my life, something crazy and fantastic. The word of God is speaking to me and impacting my life. But maybe not in the way you would expect. That is, not with the common modern-day way of looking at the Bible. Unlike the modern narrative that says the Bible is all about you and me. Unlike the “we focused” messages that are coming from the vast majority of pulpits today, God has been reminding me through His glorious Word that it is all about Jesus; Not about me. I know this may come as a shock to some of you but the Bible is not about us.
It is not even the "Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth" ("B.I.B.L.E") as it has often been described. But it is about Jesus and God's glorious rescue plan for all who would believe. From Genesis to Revelation it's all about Jesus. Jesus is on every page. Jesus is in every account. Jesus is in every picture. Colossians 2:17 which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.
Jesus told us plainly that the Bible was all about Himself in John 5:39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
The story of David and Goliath is not about you and your issues. It is not a picture of you overcoming adversity. You are not David and Goliath does not represent your problems. This is a Humanistic, man centered perversion and should be rejected. No, it speaks of Jesus. David is a picture of Jesus and Goliath the curse of sin.
It is very important that we see this because it touches an even larger issue in the church today. The so called "Law of attraction" that is being taught through the gross miss interpretation of the Bible. Simply put, the law of attraction teaches that we have the ability to attract into our life whatever we are focusing on. This is the fundamental belief behind every self- help guru and “name it claim it” preacher out there. This is what Joel Osteen, Steven Furtick and TD Jakes, are selling. This is also what the New Age New Spiritualism is built on. This is dangerous and must be rejected. This belief is “me” centered and through it, the teaching of scriptures becomes “me” centric.
Christian. Do not be fooled. You are not the center of any universe and this life is not about how happy or blessed you can be. It's about Jesus. You are greatly valued by God. He proved it by sending His Son to die for you, but this does not mean it is all about you. Salvation brings glory to God - not us.
I hate to break it to you, but this purpose driven self-centered gospel that started with guys like Rick Warren and Bill Hybels and is now being pushed by tens of thousands of pastors across the world is a false gospel. You are not at the center of the plan. Jesus is. You can join in and be a part of it but if you will not, God will send another. You are not intrinsically important to the whole plan. You have the privilege of being a part of it if you will obey and follow. This idea that God cannot do it without you is absurd and offensive. Let's get over ourselves and look to make much of Jesus. Remember what God said to the prophet who thought he was all alone: 1Kings 19:18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal: Yeah, God will send another if you will not go. It's not all up to you. This is His plan. You're not going to throw Him off.
I know God loves you and me. He proved it at the cross. I know we have worth beyond measure because of the blood that was shed for us. But I know it's all about Jesus because this is HIS-tory. Not ours. This is His creation and we are His. We have been purchased by His blood through the finished work of the cross.
I am so thankful to be His and to be treasured by Him but I must keep it in perspective and remember it is all about Him and not about me.
