Matthew 5:6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
God has placed in every living thing a sense of self preservation. The desire to live and willingness to fight to stay alive. This is what keeps us from doing things we know would kill or hurt us and fight to stay alive when we are put in jeopardy. Self-preservation moves you to eat through hunger and drink through thirst. It’s your body's natural effort to stay alive.
Jesus tells us we should hunger and thirst after righteousness with at least the same intensity that we do for food and water. We should recognize that we need righteousness like we need food. Why are we so quick to take care of the body but so slow to take care of the Spirit. We need to live like we know the truth. That this body is going to pass away along with everything in this world, but your Spirit will live on.
Proverbs 10:2 Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, But righteousness delivers from death.
I wonder what would happen if we obeyed the Spirit and pursued righteousness with the same level of conviction that we do food and water. If we placed Righteousness at the same level of importance as eating and drinking. I think this is what Jesus was trying to say. That we should want it, Chase it, Hunger and Thirst after it. That we would see righteousness as vital for life itself.
Proverbs 21:21 He who follows righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness and honor.
I pray that God creates in us a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness. That He moves upon our lives and hearts drawing into a deep love for Jesus remembering what He said in John 14:15 "If you love Me, Keep My commandments". In Jesus name. Amen.
