Ecclesiastes 7:21-22 (paraphrase)
Do not take to heart everything people say, Lest you hear someone cursing you. For many times, also, your own heart has known that even you have cursed others.
Wow, I needed this reminder. Because I am often hurt by others from the same things I am guilty of doing myself. The truth is "my heart has known that even I have cursed others". These verses could probably be taken (individually) in many different ways, but for me this morning they spoke of God's grace.
I am a child of God. I have been redeemed and forgiven. I am accepted, not because I have earned it, but by God's grace alone through faith alone. The righteousness of Jesus has been imputed to me because I have repented (agreed with God regarding my sin and turned from it to Him) and believed (in Jesus, His death and resurrection that has paid for my sins). God's grace has made me right with Him in spite of me, not because of me. By His righteousness, not mine.
With this in mind, I can take Solomon's words and apply it, so I remember to show others the same grace God has shown me. Especially when I recognize that I am not doing any better then they are for "my own heart has known that even I have cursed others". Then I can "not take to heart everything people say" but instead I can allow forgiveness to cover and grace to shine bringing Glory our Gracious God and Savior Jesus Christ.
